Mission Statement

The purpose of the Investment Society is to empower our members to become successful leaders and attain high caliber positions in world class corporations or are successful business owners. We are dedicated to fostering a community of passionate students and alumni who are committed to lifelong learning, collaboration, and professional development. As a society, we hope to solidify and enhance UTSA’s status as a talent feeder and recruiting destination for finance firms seeking high-achieving candidates with a demonstrated interest in the industry.

Overview

The Investment Society serves as a platform for high achieving UTSA students to further develop their knowledge of finance and to successfully prepare for recruitment and a career in the industry. The Investment Society prepares its members for careers in finance through in-depth weekly educational meetings, student-led classes, professional trips, resume workshops and mock interviews, and a robust alumni database. A selective group of student analysts manage the Investment Society’s portfolio of global equities.

History

The Investment Society was founded in 2007 by Sergio Silva and sponsored by Ronald Sweet with a commitment to strengthen the representation of UTSA on Wall Street. The organization’s founding members recognized that there were high-performing students on campus with a passion for finance and investments, but limited opportunities for recruitment and professional development. The Investment Society has since then grown to a vast network of outperforming professionals working at top firms in investment banking, private equity, asset management, and other fields in finance.

Our Objectives

Education

An important goal of the Investment Society is to educate members about investing and strengthen their knowledge of financial markets. This goal is comprised in two parts: First, our senior members lead general meetings featuring financial markets, economy, and M&A updates that provide members with a framework to understand current economic conditions and events. Second, senior members lead several classes intended for new members to learn the basics of accounting, valuation, monetary policy, and use of financial data tools.

Investing

A select group of students are taught on developing fundamental company diligence, financial modeling techniques, and presenting well-researched investment ideas. These students manage the Investment Society’s student-run portfolio comprising across all sectors. Sector teams analyze companies, model performance, craft investment memos, and present buy recommendations to the society and the investment committee.

Professional Development

Our graduating members have successfully secured offers from firms on both the sell side and buy side. Our members are exceptionally skilled and high-achieving individuals, which the Investment Society enhances through our vast resources and network of alumni. The hands-on training and industry pitch standards adequately equip our members to enter the workforce with confidence and hit the ground running in their internships or full-time careers.
